What to Do Right After ACL Reconstruction Surgery: A Patient’s Guide

Undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery is a significant step towards reclaiming your mobility and returning to an active lifestyle. However, the recovery process is crucial for a successful outcome. Here’s a quick guide on what you should do immediately following your surgery to set yourself up for the best recovery possible.

  1. Follow Post-Operative Instructions Carefully: Your surgeon will provide specific instructions regarding wound care, medications, physical activity and crutch use. Adhering to these guidelines is vital to avoid complications and promote healing. Make sure to understand these instructions before you leave the hospital and don’t hesitate to ask questions. These instructions shouldn't be cookie-cutter and should specific to your situation and procedure!

  2. Manage Pain and Swelling: Pain and swelling are common after ACL surgery. Use the prescribed medications as directed, and consider over-the-counter pain relievers if approved by your doctor. Applying ice packs to the knee for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day, can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Elevating your leg above heart level when resting can also assist with swelling.

  3. Keep the Surgical Area Clean and Dry: Proper wound care is essential to prevent infections. Follow your surgeon’s advice on how to keep the incision site clean and dry. If you have any signs of infection—such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge—contact your healthcare provider promptly.

  4. Start Gentle Movement Early: While you’ll need to rest, gentle movement is crucial. Begin with the range-of-motion exercises recommended by your physical therapist or surgeon to maintain flexibility and prevent stiffness. Avoid putting weight on the leg until advised by your medical team.

  5. Attend Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-ups with your surgeon and physical therapist are important to monitor your progress and adjust your rehabilitation plan as needed. These appointments help ensure your recovery is on track and address any concerns that arise.

  6. Prioritize Nutrition, Hydration, and Sleep: Eating a balanced diet and staying hydrated can support your body’s healing process. Focus on foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein to aid tissue repair and overall recovery. Equally important is getting quality sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night to help your body recover and heal. Proper rest boosts your immune system, reduces inflammation, and can make a significant difference in how quickly you bounce back.

  7. Do your home exercises: Everything your DPT gives you to do at home has a reason! If you don't know the reason, ask, but do your exercises! Here are two that you're almost gauranteed to get:

    1. THE QUAD SET

b. THE EXTENSION STRETCH

By following these steps, you can lay a solid foundation for a successful recovery. Remember, patience and adherence to medical advice are key. With time and proper care, you’ll be well on your way to getting back to your favorite activities and enjoying life without knee pain.
